Walt and June Spread Out Decades of Old Photos. Mabel Started Inspecting.

Decades of family history are spread across the wooden table: black-and-white snapshots of weddings, picnics and long-ago birthdays, some curled at the corners and some with faded handwriting on the back. Walt sorts one stack with careful fingers while June studies a picture closely, her reading glasses low on her nose. Right in the middle of it all, Mabel the tortoiseshell has her nose to the prints, sniffing each one as though she is helping decide which ones go in the album. A mug of tea and a dish of colorful paper clips sit nearby.

Going through old photographs together is a wonderful activity for older adults. It sparks storytelling, brings back names and places, and can be a lovely way to pass family history on to children and grandchildren. If you are organizing prints, it is worth handling them by the edges, storing them in acid-free sleeves or boxes, and labeling names and dates while memories are fresh. With a cat nearby, keep drinks away from the pile and watch for chewing, since paper corners can be tempting. Scanning favorite pictures is also a good idea, so copies can be shared and the originals stay safe.

Every photo on this table holds a story, and Mabel seems determined to hear them all. One day she might even earn a spot in the album herself.
