Grandpa Was Enjoying His Sandwich. Then Jasper Gave Him That Look.
Lunch on the bench is one of life's simple pleasures, and Grandpa is clearly enjoying it. Dressed in a cream cable-knit cardigan over a plaid shirt, he holds half a sandwich stuffed with fresh lettuce, a few crumbs already scattered on his sleeve. Behind him, a tidy front yard and a door with a wreath glow in soft daylight. Draped across the bench beside him, Jasper the Bengal has turned his head upward and fixed Grandpa with a long, hopeful stare, his whiskers forward and his amber eyes impossibly wide.
Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are designed to get nutrients mainly from animal protein. Bread, lettuce, and condiments do little for them, and some sandwich ingredients, such as onions, garlic, and certain spreads, can be harmful. Treats and extras of any kind should make up only a small part of a cat's daily diet, with the rest coming from a complete and balanced cat food. If you want to reward your cat during your own meal, keep a few cat treats in your pocket. That way, your cat still gets a little something special without any risk.
Grandpa might be tempted by that face, but he knows better. Jasper will get a scratch behind the ears and maybe a proper treat when they get home. For now, they are simply enjoying a quiet lunch in each other's company.
