Grandpa Spread Decades of Old Photos on the Table. Mochi Had to Inspect Each One.
Decades of family history are spread across the kitchen table, one black-and-white snapshot at a time. Grandpa, in a beige sweater and pale blue collar, sorts through the old photographs with careful fingers, a faint smile on his face as he lingers over each one. Mochi has hoisted his front paws up onto the table edge and pressed his flat nose right down among the pictures, sniffing them as if he too could recognize a familiar face. A blue coffee mug, a pair of reading glasses, and a folded napkin sit nearby, and plants on the windowsill catch the gray morning light.
Dogs explore the world through their noses, and old paper carries plenty of interesting scents, from dust and ink to the hands that have held it. That's why a dog will often investigate anything new you spread out on a table. If you're handling heirlooms, though, it's worth setting some gentle limits. Paws can bend corners, drool can stain prints, and some dogs will happily walk off with a photo to chew. Teaching a reliable off or leave it cue helps, and so does giving your dog a chew toy or a comfy spot nearby while you work. Precious originals are safest spread on a high table or scanned before a lot of handling.
Still, there's something sweet about Mochi joining this trip down memory lane. He wasn't around when these photos were taken, but he's certainly part of the family story now.
