Grandma and Grandpa Rolled Out Their Yoga Mats. Misty Took Over the Class.
Two yoga mats, one blue and one green, are rolled out across the living room floor. Grandma, in a grey cardigan, leans forward into a gentle seated stretch, laughing as she reaches for her toes. Grandpa, beside her in a denim shirt, is doing his best to touch his own bare feet. And sprawled right across the blue mat, front legs stretched long and back legs tucked in Grandma's lap, is Misty the Russian Blue, showing everyone how a real stretch is done. A cup of tea and a pair of knitted slippers wait nearby for the cooldown.
Gentle stretching, yoga, and balance exercises can be a wonderful part of staying active as we age. They help with flexibility and can make everyday movements easier. It is always a good idea for older adults to check with their doctor before starting a new exercise routine and to go slowly. Cats, of course, are natural stretching experts. They stretch after almost every nap to wake up their muscles and joints. Many will happily join their people on a yoga mat, drawn by the warmth and the attention. Just watch your step and keep movements slow, since a cat can easily wander underfoot during a pose.
Some people need a class to learn proper form. This couple has a live-in instructor who works for treats and never runs late. Misty may not hold her pose for long, but her enthusiasm is truly inspiring.
