The Rain Caught Them Mid-Walk. Grandma and Grandpa Took Care of Rufus First.
Rain is still pouring outside the open door, and the mudroom floor is dotted with wet boots and drips. Grandma and Grandpa, both still in their soaked rain jackets, kneel on either side of Rufus, wrapping him snugly in a big cream knit blanket. Only his face peeks out, damp ears framing those sorrowful eyes, as if to say the weather was entirely their idea. An umbrella hangs by the coats, a basket sits on the shelf above, and a warm wall lamp makes the little entryway feel like a safe harbor from the storm.
Drying a dog thoroughly after a wet walk is a simple habit that pays off. Towel off the coat, then pay special attention to the ears, the paws and the spaces between the toes, where moisture can linger and cause irritation. Breeds with long, heavy ears, like Basset Hounds, are more prone to ear trouble when moisture gets trapped inside, so gently wiping the outer ear is helpful. In cold weather, keep older or short-coated dogs out of drafts until they are fully dry. If you notice frequent head shaking, scratching or a smell from the ears afterward, talk to your vet.
Rufus may not have enjoyed the downpour, but he definitely enjoys the aftermath. A warm blanket, two people fussing over him and maybe a biscuit on the way. Rainy days have their perks.
