Grandpa Rolled Out the Yoga Mat for His Morning Stretches and Got a Copycat
Down on the living room floor, a green yoga mat has been rolled out between the couch and the coffee table. Grandpa kneels on it in shorts and his vest, palms pressed flat in front of him, leaning into a slow stretch with a grin that suggests his knees have opinions. Right alongside, Domino has stretched out too, front legs extended, chest low, and back end up, matching the pose almost perfectly. A basket of blankets, a pair of slippers, and a few scattered cat toys complete the scene.
Gentle stretching is a great habit for older adults. It can help maintain flexibility, balance, and comfort in everyday movement, and many people find it relaxing. Starting slowly, never stretching to the point of pain, and checking with a doctor before beginning a new routine are all sensible steps. Cats, meanwhile, are natural stretching experts. They often stretch after waking up, which helps them loosen muscles and get the blood flowing. A cat that seems stiff, reluctant to jump, or slower to stretch than usual may be dealing with joint discomfort, especially in its senior years, and that's worth a conversation with your vet.
Domino's form is honestly impressive. If there were a teacher here, he'd probably be the star pupil, though he might skip the cool-down and go straight to a nap.
Exercise is always easier with a buddy, especially one who makes you laugh in the middle of a stretch.
