Grandma Went Fishing Off the Old Dock. Maple Came Along to Supervise.

Fishing line in the water, a grin on her face, and a very interested calico supervising every move. Grandma sits on the edge of a weathered wooden dock, holding a slim rod over the green water while Maple perches right beside her, gazing up as if asking whether anything is biting yet. Grandma's glasses catch the afternoon light, and her cardigan sleeves are pushed up for the job. Behind them, the dock stretches toward a yellow house with potted red geraniums, a few garden chairs and a backyard full of greenery.

Cats are natural hunters, so it is no wonder Maple finds fishing fascinating. Many cats will happily watch water, birds or anything that moves for long stretches. If your cat joins outdoor activities, keep safety in mind. Fishing hooks and lines are a serious hazard, since cats may bat at dangling line or try to eat bait, and swallowed hooks require urgent vet care. Docks can also be slippery, and while cats can swim, most do not enjoy it and can struggle to climb out. Some owners use a harness and leash for supervised outings near water. And as tempting as a fresh catch may be, raw fish is not an ideal treat for cats.

Shared hobbies like this give older adults a reason to get outside, move around and enjoy fresh air with a familiar companion.

Whether the fish cooperate or not, Maple seems confident the day is going swimmingly.
