The Porch Swing Stopped Swaying. Both Passengers Were Fast Asleep.
The porch swing has stopped swaying, and both of its passengers are fast asleep. Grandma leans back against a striped cushion, her head tipped to one side and her eyes peacefully closed, a little gold earring catching the late afternoon light. Maple is curled up across her chest and lap, chin resting on Grandma's arm and eyes squeezed shut, her orange, black and white coat a cozy patchwork against the cream cardigan. A thick knit throw drapes over them both. Beyond the chain-hung swing, potted plants line the porch rail, a garden hose coils near the fence, and the yard glows in warm evening sun.
Napping with a pet is one of life's simple pleasures, and many people find it relaxing. Cats choose sleeping spots carefully, favoring places that feel warm and safe, so a cat curling up on a person is often a sign of a strong bond. For older adults, a regular afternoon rest can be refreshing, and the quiet company of a cat may make it even more restful. If you enjoy porch naps, make sure the swing is securely hung and stable, and have a blanket handy as the evening cools. An indoor cat dozing outdoors should still be supervised in case something startles her.
Some of the best moments in a day are the ones where nothing happens at all.
The chores can wait, the phone can wait, and the world can wait. This nap is far too good to interrupt.
