Grandpa Fell Asleep in the Hammock. Somebody Volunteered for Guard Duty.

Eyes closed, glasses still on, Kenji has drifted off in a rope hammock strung between two sturdy trees. His tan sweater vest is rumpled, one arm tucked under his head, and his face has that perfectly slack look of a truly excellent nap. Just below him, Maple lies on the grass with her head up and alert, keeping one amber eye on the yard. Behind them, a pair of work boots sits by the steps, a blue watering can rests by the house, and the potted plants on the porch catch the warm, late-day light. Fallen leaves are scattered here and there, hinting at early autumn.

Australian Shepherds often take on the role of watchful companion, and resting nearby while staying aware of their surroundings is very typical of the breed. Their herding background makes many of them naturally observant and a bit protective of their people. For dogs who lounge outdoors with you, a few comforts go a long way: access to shade, a bowl of fresh water, and a check for ticks after time in grass and leaves, especially for long-coated breeds. Ask your vet which tick and flea prevention is right for your area, since needs vary by region and season. Hammocks are best left to humans; a dog who tries to hop in can easily tip it over.

Nobody in the yard is in a hurry. The leaves can wait to be raked, the boots can wait by the porch, and Maple will be right there when Kenji finally opens his eyes.
