Kenji Dozed Off in His Recliner. Maple Took Over the Armrest Watch.
The television is off, the afternoon sun is streaming through the window, and Kenji has lost the battle with his eyelids. He has sunk deep into a brown recliner, head tipped back, mouth slightly open, still wearing his cream sweater vest and blue plaid shirt. Draped across the armrest beside him is Maple, white paw dangling over the edge, chin propped up, and her pale eyes wide open as if she has volunteered to stay awake for the both of them. A basket of blankets, stacked books, a tissue box, and a mug on the side table hint at a lazy, well-earned break.
Dogs often choose elevated spots like armrests and couch backs because they offer a good view of the room and keep them close to their favorite person. It is very normal for a devoted breed like the Australian Shepherd to want to be near their human even during downtime. If your dog likes perching on furniture, be mindful of jumping on and off, which can be hard on joints over time, especially as dogs age. Pet ramps or steps can help, and so can a cozy dog bed placed right beside your chair. Older dogs may also need softer surfaces to rest on, so talk to your vet if you notice stiffness after naps.
Kenji will wake up eventually, maybe with a little stiffness in his neck and a few dog hairs on his shoulder. Maple will still be right there, looking pleased that the nap went so well.
