Eggs, Toast, and Berries on the Patio. Bruno Had His Eye on One Thing.
Sunlight warms the stone patio, and breakfast is laid out on a weathered wooden table: scrambled eggs and toast on a white plate, a bowl of strawberries and blueberries, half an avocado, and a big mug of black coffee. Gus, with his glasses pushed up on his head and a wide grin in his gray beard, tears off a little corner of toast. Bruno has propped his chin right at the table's edge, tongue sneaking out for a hopeful lick, brown eyes fixed on that piece of bread. A clothesline, a blue patio chair, and a green watering can complete the easy backyard morning.
Some breakfast foods make fine occasional treats for dogs, while others are best kept on your own plate. Plain cooked eggs, a bit of plain toast, strawberries, and blueberries are generally considered safe for most healthy dogs in small amounts. Avocado is one many vets recommend avoiding, partly because of the large pit and partly because it is rich and can upset stomachs. Coffee should always stay out of reach since caffeine is harmful to dogs. Watch out for butter, bacon grease, and heavily seasoned foods too, which can cause digestive trouble. When sharing, keep portions tiny so treats do not crowd out your dog's regular balanced diet.
Gus knows exactly what he is doing, and so does Bruno. One corner of toast today, probably another tomorrow, and a breakfast tradition firmly in place.
