Gus Turned the Hose on the Dusty Old Sedan. Bruno Got in the Way on Purpose.

AI imageboxercar washwater play

Water arcs from the hose and splashes across the side of a dusty old blue sedan, and right in the middle of it all, Bruno is having the time of his life. The brindle Boxer bounds through the spray with his mouth wide open, one front paw raised, droplets bouncing off his striped coat and white chest. Gus, in a plaid shirt, khakis, and suspenders, leans forward with the hose and a gleam behind his glasses, clearly aiming at least partly at the dog. A green hose snakes across the wet driveway, and a garage door, potted plants, and a blue trash bin fill the background.

Water play is a great way for many dogs to cool off on warm days, which is especially helpful for Boxers since their short muzzles make them less efficient at cooling down through panting. Still, a few cautions apply. Let the hose run until the water is cool, since water sitting in a sunny hose can get very hot. Avoid high-pressure spray, especially toward the face and ears. After water play, dry your dog's ears well, as moisture trapped inside can contribute to ear infections in some dogs. And keep car-washing soaps and degreasers away from pets, since they are not meant to be licked or swallowed.

The car might come out a little cleaner, but Bruno is the one who will need the most toweling off. Judging by the grins all around, that is a trade both of them are happy to make.
