Roy Didn't Look Up From His Knitting Once. That Was a Mistake.
The living room looks like a yarn shop exploded. Cream-colored strands loop across the couch, the floor, the coffee table, and most dramatically, Copper. The Golden Retriever sits upright beside Roy, wrapped from ears to paws in tangled yarn, gazing straight ahead with a dignified, slightly bewildered expression. Roy, in a plaid shirt and suspenders, keeps his eyes on his needles and the little cream piece he is knitting, apparently unbothered. A ball of yarn sits in a bowl at his feet, a cup of tea steams nearby, and a stuffed toy, a remote, and baskets of knitting supplies are scattered around them.
Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve, and many of them still love to pick things up and carry them around, which can make dangling yarn irresistible. While it looks funny, yarn and string can be dangerous if swallowed. A long strand can become trapped in the digestive tract and cause a serious, sometimes life-threatening problem. Gently unwind any tangles, keep yarn balls in lidded containers, and put your knitting away when you step out of the room. Offering a sturdy rope toy or a soft plush for your dog to carry can satisfy that retrieving urge more safely. If you think your dog swallowed yarn, call your vet right away.
Once Copper is untangled, maybe Roy will knit him a scarf. He has certainly earned one for being such a patient, if somewhat tangled, assistant.
