Grandpa Rolled Up His Pants and Put His Feet in the Lake. Pearl Had Her Own Opinion.

Golden hour paints the lake in amber and green. Grandpa Gus has rolled his trousers up to the shin and dangles his bare feet in the cool water at the end of a weathered dock, glasses glinting in the low sun, a contented half-smile under his beard. Pearl sits a careful distance from the edge, all four white paws planted firmly on the dry boards, her fluffy coat glowing in the evening light. She seems perfectly happy to keep him company, as long as nobody suggests she join him in the water. Trees and tall grasses line the far shore, and a few ripples spread out from his toes.

Most cats are wary of water, and there are some sensible reasons for it. A wet coat becomes heavy and takes a long time to dry, which is especially true for a thick double coat like a Persian's. Being soaked can also leave a cat chilled and less agile. That said, every cat is different, and a few breeds are known for being more curious about water. If you bring a cat near a lake, pool, or dock, keep them on a secure harness and leash and never leave them unattended, since a slip into deep water can be dangerous. Shady spots and fresh drinking water help on warm evenings, too.

Gus gets the cool water on his feet, and Pearl gets the warm boards and the best view of the sunset. Everyone is exactly where they want to be.
