Grandpa Was Halfway Through a Thousand-Piece Puzzle. Someone Was Watching Every Move.

A warm lamp glows in the corner of the kitchen, and the wooden table has been taken over by a jigsaw puzzle of a sweeping country landscape. Half the scene is finished, and stray pieces are scattered everywhere. Grandpa Gus leans in with one piece pinched between his fingers, studying where it might fit. On the chair across from him, Pearl sits upright with her tail draped down over the edge and her head tilted, eyes on Gus rather than the puzzle, as if waiting for the right moment to offer advice. A cup of tea, a folded dish towel, and a coffee mug complete the quiet evening setup.

Puzzles are a popular hobby for older adults, and it's easy to see the appeal. They encourage focus and patience, offer a satisfying sense of progress, and make for a relaxing way to spend an evening. Having a pet nearby adds companionship to the routine. Cats, however, are well known for taking an interest in small objects on tables. Puzzle pieces are tempting to bat onto the floor, and small items can be a choking risk if chewed. Many puzzle fans keep a board or tray they can cover when stepping away, and give their cat a chair or perch nearby so the cat can feel included without walking across the project.

So far, Pearl is behaving like a perfect lady, watching patiently from her own seat. Whether she'll stay that way once the last few pieces go in is another question, but Gus seems happy to take his chances.
