Grandpa Made Himself a Nice Sandwich for Lunch on the Bench. He Never Got the First Bite.

Lunch outdoors seemed like a fine idea. Grandpa Earl sat down on a wooden bench in the yard with a hearty sandwich on whole grain bread, layered with lettuce and sliced meat. He got as far as holding it up before Peaches made her move. The pink Sphynx, perched on the bench beside him, has leaned right in and clamped her teeth onto the corner of the sandwich, her eyes half-closed with determination. Earl doesn't pull it away. Instead, he gazes down at her with a weary, tender smile, like a man who has lost this battle many times before. Behind them, autumn leaves cover the lawn, and a watering can sits by the fence.

Cats are carnivores, so it's no surprise that deli meat catches their attention. But many processed lunch meats are high in salt, seasonings, and preservatives, which aren't good for cats. Some sandwich ingredients, like onions, garlic, and certain sauces, can be harmful to pets even in small amounts. If you'd like to share something, a tiny piece of plain, cooked, unseasoned chicken or turkey is a safer occasional treat. Treats in general should make up only a small part of a cat's diet. Sphynx cats are known for hearty appetites, since keeping warm without fur uses energy, but steady, balanced meals are best. Your vet can recommend the right portions.

Earl may end up eating the other half of his sandwich a little faster next time. For now, though, it seems lunch is officially for two, and Peaches has already claimed her share.
