Hank Went Fishing at Sunset. The Fish Weren't the Ones Paying Attention.

The sun is sinking low over the pond, turning the reeds gold and throwing long shadows across the weathered planks of the dock. Hank sits with an old fishing rod resting loosely in one hand, his blue plaid shirt and patched overalls soft in the evening light. He isn't watching the line at all. He's looking down at Ziggy, who sits beside him in a little collar, head tipped back, gazing up at Hank with total attention, as though the two of them are sharing a secret about where the fish are hiding.

Plenty of cats are fascinated by fishing, and it's easy to see why: the twitch of a line, the flash of a fish, and the smells of a waterfront all speak directly to their hunting instincts. If a cat comes along to the water, a snug harness and leash are a much safer choice than a collar alone, since a startled cat can slip a collar or bolt. Keep hooks, lures, and fishing line well out of reach, because cats are drawn to dangling string and swallowed line or a hook is an emergency that needs a vet right away. A shaded spot and fresh water help on warm days.

Whether or not anything bites tonight, it hardly matters. Hank has the sunset, the quiet, and a companion who thinks he's the most interesting thing on the whole lake.
