Hank Swore He Was Just Watching the Show. The Recliner Had Other Plans.
The TV is still on somewhere off to the side, and the lamp casts a warm circle of light over the living room. Hank has given up the fight with sleep, head tipped back into his brown recliner, mouth relaxed, one hand resting loosely on his overalls. A crocheted blanket has slipped half off his lap. Perched on the wide armrest beside him, Ziggy lies with his paws folded, eyes nearly shut, keeping a drowsy watch over the room. A framed family photo hangs on the wall behind them, and a basket of yarn sits on the floor.
This is one of the quiet gifts of sharing a home with a pet. Many people find that the steady presence of a cat, especially in the evening, brings a sense of calm and companionship that makes a house feel less empty. For older adults, a pet can also add gentle structure to the day through regular feeding and play. If you nap or sleep with a cat close by, it helps to make sure walkways are clear of toys and that the cat has easy access to its food, water, and litter box, so nobody trips getting up in the night.
Hank will wake up eventually, probably with a stiff neck and a cat now sprawled across his lap. Until then, Ziggy has everything under control.
