Grandma Dottie Drove Out to the Edge of the Fields. Pearl Rode Along.

Out past the last fence post, the fields roll off toward a line of trees, green and quiet under a pale sky. The old pickup is parked at the edge of the grass with its tailgate down, and Dottie has made herself comfortable on it, wrapped in her chunky oatmeal cardigan with her silver hair tousled by the breeze. One hand rests gently on Pearl's back. The fluffy white cat sits beside her on the scuffed metal bed of the truck, soft fur ruffled by the wind, face turned toward the open field with calm, thoughtful eyes, as if she's taking in the view too.

Trips into the countryside can be relaxing for people, but open spaces bring extra things to consider for cats. Fields may hide wildlife, farm chemicals, and burrs that tangle easily in a fluffy coat. A white cat with long fur can pick up all sorts of debris, so a quick brushing after time outdoors helps prevent mats. If your cat comes along on a drive, keep it in a secure carrier while the vehicle is moving and on a harness and leash when outside, since an unfamiliar place makes it easy for a startled cat to bolt. Checking for ticks afterward is a good seasonal habit too.

For now, there's no rush to go anywhere. Dottie has the breeze, the open sky, and a warm, fluffy friend under her hand, and that's a fine way to spend an afternoon.
