Grandma Loretta Fell Asleep in the Hammock. Saffron Stayed Wide Awake.
A rope hammock hangs low between two sturdy tree trunks, swaying gently in the late-day breeze. Grandma Loretta has sunk into it in a denim jacket over a cream tee, a gray throw and a striped blanket tucked around her, eyes closed in a deep, peaceful nap. Saffron, however, is not sleeping at all. The ruddy Abyssinian sits upright on her lap with her front paws together and eyes wide open, as if she has been appointed official guard of the afternoon. Pink flowers bloom on the porch behind them, and a wooden chair holds a folded blanket and a water bottle.
It is no surprise that Saffron is the one awake. Abyssinians are known as busy, alert cats who like to keep tabs on their surroundings. Many cats choose high or elevated spots to rest because those places let them watch for movement while feeling secure. A gently swaying hammock can be fun for a confident cat, though some are wary of unstable surfaces. If your cat joins you outdoors, keep the session supervised, check that the hammock is securely tied, and bring them inside if they seem stressed. Watch for overheating, too, on very warm days, and make sure fresh water is close by.
Grandma Loretta gets to drift off without a single worry, because someone is keeping watch. The breeze rocks the hammock, the leaves rustle overhead, and Saffron takes her job very seriously. Every nap should come with a guardian this devoted.
