The Hammock Between the Two Old Trees Was Meant for One. Dumpling Had Other Plans.
A cream rope hammock hangs between two thick tree trunks, and it has swallowed up both of them. Grandma Bea lies back with her eyes closed and her head tipped toward Dumpling, wrapped in a chunky oatmeal cardigan. The white Bulldog is tucked right against her, his wrinkled face resting on her shoulder and his paws curled over the edge of the hammock, fast asleep with his jowls squished in the most comfortable way. Leaves rustle overhead, and behind them a blue watering can, a few pots, and the gray siding of the house sit in the soft light.
Bulldogs love to nap, often sleeping much of the day, and they especially love sleeping close to their people. Sharing a hammock with a heavy dog, though, calls for a bit of caution. Make sure the hammock and its supports can handle the extra weight, and help a Bulldog in and out rather than letting it jump, since the breed is prone to joint and back strain. Shade is important too, because Bulldogs overheat easily on warm days. Outdoor naps are a good time for a quick check for ticks and fleas afterward, especially in leafy areas.
With a breeze rocking them gently and the world quiet around them, Grandma Bea and Dumpling have found a rare kind of peace. Nobody is in a hurry to climb out. The afternoon can stretch as long as it likes.
