Two Lawn Chairs, One Sunset, and a Cat Who Didn't Want to Miss It
The sky over the fence has turned soft orange and pink, and the backyard is going quiet for the evening. Harold sits in a striped lawn chair in a blue plaid shirt and glasses, gazing toward the horizon, while Ruth, in a buttery yellow cardigan, sits beside him with a calm, faraway smile. Perched on Harold's knees, Saffron faces the same direction, ears forward and eyes half-lit by the fading light, as though she too is waiting to see how the sunset turns out. Potted plants, a watering can, and the warm glow of the house add a homey touch.
Evenings can be an especially good time for cats and their people to bond. Many cats are naturally more alert around dusk, which makes a quiet sit outside a nice way to share some of that energy calmly. If you bring your cat outdoors in the evening, stay with it, keep it on a harness or in a safely enclosed area, and head inside before it's fully dark. Dusk is also when insects come out, so talk to your vet about appropriate flea and tick prevention if your cat spends time in the yard. A lap to sit on, as Saffron shows, is often all the encouragement a cat needs to stay put.
Some sunsets are worth watching in silence. With the day winding down and Saffron settled in, Harold and Ruth have exactly the company they want for this one.
