Ken Poured Himself a Cold Lemonade. Duke Wanted to Know What Was in It.
The screened porch is shady and cool, and Grandpa Ken is taking a long, refreshing sip from a tall glass of lemonade with a slice floating on top. He wears a cream cable-knit sweater vest over a light blue shirt, eyes soft behind his glasses as he enjoys the drink. Duke has scooted right up next to him, wrinkled muzzle lifted toward the glass, nostrils working, brown eyes curious and hopeful. Potted hydrangeas and greenery line the porch, a plaid blanket hangs over a chair, and a pair of sneakers rests by the steps.
On warm days, dogs need easy access to fresh, cool water and plenty of shade, but lemonade isn't a good thing to share. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and sugary drinks don't offer anything dogs need. Some sugar-free drinks also contain xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs. Boxers in particular are prone to overheating because of their short muzzles, so keep an eye out for heavy panting, drooling, or sluggishness, and move your dog somewhere cool if you notice them. A bowl of water with a few ice cubes can be a fun, safe way to cool off together.
Ken will probably finish the lemonade himself, but he'll make sure Duke's water bowl is full. On a slow, shady afternoon, that's all two old friends really need.
