A Foggy Field, an Old Tailgate, and the Way Skye Looks at Grandpa Earl

Fog hangs low over the field, softening the fence posts and the distant row of trees into gray shapes. Grandpa Earl sits on the lowered tailgate of his pickup, hands resting on his knees, smiling down with real tenderness. Skye sits beside him on the truck bed, her face turned up toward his, ears relaxed and eyes fixed on him. The tall grass is silvery with damp, and everything is so quiet you can almost hear the morning settling in.

That upward gaze is something Border Collie owners know well. The breed was developed to work in close partnership with a shepherd, watching for signals and responding fast, and that focus often carries over into everyday life. Many Border Collies want to know where their person is and what they are doing at all times. It is part of what makes them so trainable and such devoted companions. It also means they generally do best with plenty of time together and structured activities, rather than long stretches alone. Without enough engagement, some may develop habits like herding children, chasing cars, or obsessive behaviors, so channeling that focus into games and training is key.

On a morning like this, though, the job is simple: keep Earl company while he looks out over the field. Skye seems to take that job very seriously.

There is nothing to do and nowhere to be. The mist will lift soon enough, and until then, the tailgate is the best seat around.
