Grandpa Earl Opened His Book and Started Reading Out Loud. Skye Tilted Her Head.

Chapter one has Skye's full attention. Grandpa Earl sits on the couch with an open paperback in his weathered hands, reading aloud in what looks like a low, steady voice, his mouth caught mid-sentence. Skye lies right beside him with her front paws on the cushions, head tilted slightly, ears soft, gazing at his face as though she is following every word of the plot. The room around them is calm and bright, with a knitted throw draped over the couch, a basket of blankets in the corner, a white mug on the side table, and a leafy plant soaking up the window light.

Reading aloud to a dog is more than just sweet. Some libraries and schools run programs where children practice reading to calm, trained dogs, because a patient, nonjudgmental listener can make reading feel less stressful. For adults, reading aloud can be a relaxing ritual. For the dog, the steady sound of a familiar voice is often soothing, and dogs are known to respond to human tone and attention. Even if Skye is not grasping the storyline, she is getting what she probably values most: quiet time, close company, and Earl's voice directed right at her.

That little head tilt is a nice touch. Dogs often tilt their heads when listening closely to a person speaking, and to anyone watching, it makes them look wonderfully engaged.

Whatever the book is about, it has at least one devoted fan, and she will definitely be back for the next chapter.
