Pearl Came Home From Her Walk Looking Like a Drowned Cotton Ball

The rain is still streaking down the glass of the front door, and a dripping raincoat hangs on a hook nearby. Grandma Odessa stands in the entryway in her olive sweater and glasses, cradling Pearl in her arms. The little Maltese is wrapped snugly in a tan plaid blanket like a burrito, only her damp head peeking out. Her normally fluffy white fur is clumped and wet, her ears hang a little limp, and her dark eyes have that slightly offended look small dogs get when the weather does not go their way. Odessa gazes down at her with a patient, tender smile.

Small dogs like Maltese can lose body heat more quickly than larger breeds, so warming and drying them after a wet walk is a good habit. A soft, absorbent towel works well, followed by a hair dryer on a low, cool setting if your dog tolerates it, held at a safe distance. Since Maltese have a fine, single-layer coat without a dense undercoat, they may appreciate a lightweight raincoat or sweater on chilly, damp days. Brushing out the coat once it is dry helps prevent mats, and checking paws for debris or irritation is always smart after walking on wet sidewalks.

Pearl may not have enjoyed the rain, but she certainly seems to be enjoying this part. There are few places cozier than a warm blanket held in loving arms.

Next time, maybe they will wait for the clouds to clear. Then again, a cuddle like this might make the soggy walk worth it.
