An older couple naps in a rope hammock under a tree while a cinnamon Abyssinian cat sleeps curled up between them. 23 / 26

Ruth and Harold Climbed Into the Hammock for a Short Rest. They Weren't Alone for Long.

The rope hammock sways gently beneath the leafy branches, and nobody in it is awake. Harold lies back in a blue short-sleeved shirt and khaki shorts, eyes closed and mouth relaxed, while Ruth snuggles in beside him in a cream cardigan, her silver curls resting against the hammock's edge and her face peaceful in sleep. Nestled right between them is Saffron, curled into a warm cinnamon bundle with her chin tucked onto Ruth's shoulder and her eyes shut tight. The backyard around them is full of signs of a busy morning: potted plants, garden tools leaning against the shed, a basket of shoes, and a tote bag by the door.

A shared nap like this is a sign of real trust. Cats are most vulnerable while sleeping, so choosing to doze pressed against their people shows how comfortable they feel. Many cats also seek body heat, which makes a sleeping human the ideal pillow. Hammocks are lovely for people, but they can be unpredictable for pets, swinging or tipping without warning, so it is best if a cat can hop out easily. Outdoor naps should happen in shade on hot days, and it is always wise to keep an eye on a cat outside, even a sleepy one.

For now, all three of them seem to be in the deepest, most comfortable sleep imaginable. The breeze is soft, the shade is cool, and there is nowhere they need to be.

When they finally wake, it will probably be Saffron who stretches first, ready to remind everyone that it is nearly dinnertime.
