Grandma Odessa Lay Down on the Lawn for Just a Minute. Licorice Had Other Plans.

Nobody planned a nap. It just sort of happened. Grandma Odessa lies stretched out on a soft cream blanket spread across the grass, her head resting on her forearm, eyes closed and face completely at ease. Tucked against her, Licorice has gone fully boneless, front paws folded neatly, eyes shut, his glossy black coat warm from the afternoon sun. The yard around them is green and quiet, with a wooden fence, potted plants, and a flagstone path fading into soft focus in the background. Even the stray leaves in the grass seem to be staying still out of courtesy.

Cats are famous sleepers, and many adult cats spend well over half the day napping. A good portion of that is light dozing, which lets them wake quickly, though they also drop into deeper sleep in spots where they feel truly safe. Choosing to sleep pressed up against a person is often read as a sign of trust and comfort. Sunbathing is a favorite pastime too, but cats with thin or light fur on their ears and noses can sunburn, and anyone napping outdoors should mind the heat. Shade, fresh water nearby, and moving inside when it gets hot keep everyone comfortable.

For Odessa, the benefits are mutual. A warm, purring cat at your side is about as relaxing as it gets, and an unplanned nap in the sunshine counts as self-care in anyone's book. The chores will still be there when they wake up.
