Abuela Carmen Dipped Her Feet in the Lake. Mango Made His Position Very Clear.

At the end of the wooden dock, Abuela Carmen has kicked off her shoes and dipped her feet into the cool lake water. She sits on the edge of the planks in a blue tee and floral apron, smiling softly at something beside her. That something is Mango, sitting right up front in the foreground, staying very sensibly on the dry boards. His long orange fur glows in the overcast light, and his golden eyes stare straight at the camera with a look that says he has no intention of joining her in the water. Behind them, the dock stretches back toward shore, past reeds and a few old posts.

Most cats can swim if they have to, but few enjoy it, and docks can be risky places for pets. A slip off the edge can leave a cat struggling to climb back up steep sides, so supervision near water is essential. A harness and leash are a good idea for any dockside outing. Standing water in lakes and ponds can also carry hazards: in warm weather, some lakes develop harmful algae blooms, often called blue-green algae, which can be very dangerous to animals that drink the water or lick it off their fur. If the water looks scummy or discolored, keep pets away.

Mango has clearly decided the best way to enjoy the lake is from a comfortable, dry distance. Carmen gets to cool her feet, Mango keeps his fur perfect, and both of them get a peaceful afternoon by the water.
