Grandpa Went Out to Shovel the Driveway. Rusty Treated It Like a Snow Day Festival.

Fresh snow blankets the driveway, the fence line, and the bare shrubs, and Grandpa Hank has bundled up for the job. A navy knit cap is pulled down over his white hair, glasses perched on his nose, a gray puffer jacket zipped over the familiar red plaid, and brown gloves gripping a metal shovel. He is supposed to be clearing a path. Rusty has other priorities. The Beagle is crouched mid-pounce in a fluffy snowbank, chest buried, ears flopping, a sprinkle of flakes on his back and a look of pure delight on his face.

Many dogs love a good romp in the snow, but a few winter precautions keep the fun safe. Short-coated breeds like Beagles can get chilly faster than thick-coated dogs, so watch for shivering or lifted paws and head inside when they seem cold. Snow and ice can pack between paw pads, and de-icing salts and chemicals on driveways and sidewalks can irritate feet or upset the stomach if licked off later. Wiping paws with a damp cloth after outdoor time is a simple habit that helps, and pet-safe ice melt is worth considering at home. Antifreeze is a serious danger as well, so clean up any drips in the garage right away.

For seniors, shoveling is real exercise, so taking breaks and pacing yourself is wise, and a dog bouncing around is a great excuse to pause and laugh. Hank's driveway may take a little longer to clear today, but it is hard to imagine better company out in the cold.
