They Made It All the Way Home From the Long Walk. Then Pepper Stopped at the Porch Steps.

The long walk is over, and someone has run out of steam. Grandpa Earl stands at the foot of a set of weathered wooden porch steps, his overalls dusty at the knees and his chambray shirt rumpled, cradling Pepper against his chest like a sack of precious groceries. He looks down at her with a crinkly, tender grin. The Miniature Schnauzer hangs comfortably in his arms, paws dangling, beard scruffy from the trail, wearing a slightly grumpy, entirely satisfied expression that says she walked as far as she intended to. Sunlight falls across the porch railing and a few leafy plants at the edge of the yard.

Matching a walk to a dog's fitness keeps outings enjoyable for everyone. Miniature Schnauzers are energetic little dogs that generally enjoy a good daily walk, but even active dogs have limits, and short legs cover a lot more steps than ours do. Signs that a dog is getting tired include lagging behind, heavy panting, lying down on the path, or sitting and refusing to move. It is fine to build up distance gradually, especially for puppies, older dogs, or dogs that have been less active. After a long ramble, check paws for small cuts, burrs, or stones caught between the pads. A drink of fresh water and a rest afterward round things off nicely.

Pepper has clearly decided that the porch steps are Earl's responsibility today. He does not seem to mind the extra load one bit. Some passengers are worth carrying every single time.
