Clarence Cast His Line Off the Old Dock. Sapphire Had One Big Question.

The dock is old and a little mossy, the water below is murky green, and the evening sun is glowing through the trees at the edge of the yard. Clarence sits on the planks in a green cardigan and khaki shorts, bare legs dangling toward the water, holding a simple pole with both hands and grinning at the line. Sapphire sits right beside him, fluffed up and plush in the cool air, tilting her head back to gaze at him with wide blue eyes. Her expression is somewhere between adoration and an urgent question about whether any fish will be shared.

Cats and fishing seem like a natural pairing, but a few safety notes go a long way. Fishhooks and line are serious hazards: a cat can swallow a baited hook or get tangled in discarded line, and both can require emergency vet care. Keep tackle closed and out of reach, and pick up every scrap of line. Raw fish is not a great treat either, since it can carry parasites and, over time, can interfere with a cat's nutrition. If you want to share the catch, a small piece of plain, fully cooked, boneless fish is a safer occasional treat. And around open water, keep a cat on a harness and leash.

Whether the fish are biting or not, Clarence looks perfectly happy. The light is golden, the water is calm, and his biggest fan is sitting right beside him, ready to cheer for even the smallest catch.
