An elderly couple nap side by side on a blanket on the lawn while a lemon and white Basset Hound sleeps beside them. 8 / 21

They Spread a Blanket on the Lawn to Watch the Evening Come In. Nobody Lasted.

The porch light has just come on behind them, glowing warm against the blue-gray evening, but nobody on the lawn has noticed. Harold and Bea lie curled together on a quilted blanket spread over the grass, Bea's cheek resting against Harold's head, her cream cardigan soft around her shoulders, his denim shirt rumpled. Both are sound asleep with their hands clasped. In the foreground, Waffles has flopped down right in the grass, his big lemon-and-white head sideways on the ground, long ears spread out like a pair of blankets of his own, eyes shut, jowls relaxed. Flower pots and the porch steps of the house wait quietly in the background.

Basset Hounds are sometimes called couch potatoes, and they certainly enjoy a good nap, but they still need regular, moderate exercise to stay healthy and keep their weight in check. They tend to do best with steady walks at a pace that lets them follow scents, rather than intense running. Their short legs and heavy bodies can make them prone to back and joint strain, so avoiding lots of stairs and high jumps is wise. After time on the lawn, it is a good idea to check those long ears and the folds of skin for burrs, dampness, or ticks.

A quiet nap in the grass at the end of a long day may be one of life's simplest pleasures. Harold, Bea, and Waffles have it perfected. Somebody will wake up eventually and suggest heading inside, but probably not just yet.
