A smiling white-haired grandma in a quilted vest has breakfast on a patio as an orange tabby rests a paw on the table. 24 / 29

A Croissant, Some Berries and a Sunny Patio. Then a Paw Reached the Table.

Breakfast is laid out on the patio table: a flaky croissant, a bowl of strawberries and blueberries, and a glass mug of creamy coffee. Grandma Hazel leans forward in her sage quilted vest, grinning through her glasses at her breakfast companion. Marmalade has stretched up onto the table with one paw resting on its edge, fluffy orange chest puffed and eyes locked on Hazel's face as if negotiating for a share. The backyard behind them is soft and bright, with a watering can, rubber boots and potted plants lined up along the fence.

Most breakfast foods are not meant for cats. Butter-rich pastries are high in fat, and many baked goods contain ingredients cats do not need. Fruit is not toxic in most cases, but cats have no real need for it, and grapes and raisins should always be avoided. Coffee is harmful to pets because of caffeine. If you like to share mealtimes with your cat, consider setting out a small portion of its own food or a cat treat at the same time. Teaching a cat to stay off the table, using a chair or nearby perch instead, can also make outdoor meals more relaxing.

Eating outdoors on a sunny morning is a simple joy, and doing it in good company makes it even better. For many people, pets are a cheerful part of the daily routine.

Marmalade will likely end up with a cat treat instead of a croissant, but the hopeful paw on the table was worth a try.
