Grandpa Spread a Jigsaw Puzzle Across the Table. His Cat Pulled Up a Seat.
Hundreds of puzzle pieces are spread across the wooden kitchen table, and Grandpa Walter is patiently fitting them together, his fingers pressing a piece into the half-finished border. He wears an olive cardigan over a dark shirt, his white beard neatly trimmed and his eyes fixed on the picture taking shape. Sitting upright on the next chair over, Sapphire watches the table with her blue eyes and dark mask, posture perfect, tail tucked around her paws. Behind them, a dish rack, bananas, a thermos and a plant on the windowsill fill the sunny kitchen.
Siamese cats are famously sociable and tend to want to be involved in whatever their people are doing, which is why many owners describe them as shadows. They are also intelligent and benefit from mental stimulation such as puzzle feeders, interactive toys and regular play sessions. Jigsaw pieces, though, are small enough to be swallowed or carried off, so it is wise to keep them out of reach when a curious cat is around. Offering a cat its own chair or perch nearby, as Sapphire has here, gives it a way to stay close without causing chaos.
Jigsaw puzzles are a relaxing way for older adults to keep their minds engaged, and the slow progress of filling in a picture is deeply satisfying.
Sapphire may not place a single piece, but she has clearly appointed herself the official puzzle consultant. Walter seems glad for the company.
