Grandpa Earl Sat Down to Eggs and Coffee. Skye Gave Him the Look.

Grandpa Earl has his breakfast spread across a weathered wooden table on the back patio: a bowl of scrambled eggs topped with sliced avocado, a few strawberries and blueberries, a croissant, and a speckled stoneware mug of black coffee. His fishing vest is on already, pockets stuffed with lures and gear, which means he has plans for later. For now, though, he is leaning down with a big, mustached grin toward Skye, his blue merle Border Collie. She has propped her chin right at the edge of the table, one pale blue eye fixed on him with total concentration. Behind them, the garden glows in soft morning light, with potted succulents and a watering can by the path.

That intense stare is classic Border Collie. The breed was developed to herd sheep, and part of that work involves an unwavering gaze often called the eye, used to control livestock. At home, the same focus gets pointed at people, balls, and, yes, breakfast plates. Border Collies are famously smart and high-energy, and they do best with plenty of daily exercise and mental challenges such as training, puzzle toys, or dog sports. Without enough to do, they may invent their own jobs, like herding the vacuum or the grandkids. Their striking merle coats sometimes come with blue or partly blue eyes, which is part of their charm.

Skye may or may not get a bite of egg this morning. Either way, she has made her case clearly, and Earl looks like a man who is about to lose this argument with a smile on his face.
