Grandma Nell Poured a Glass of Lemonade. Then Onyx Joined Her on the Bench.
The back porch is dappled with green shade from the trees, a lattice overhang filters the afternoon light, and a pot of red flowers brightens the railing. Nell sits in her favorite spot in a faded denim shirt over a white tee, her long silver braid draped over one shoulder, raising a glass of lemonade with a slice of lemon bobbing among the ice. She closes her eyes for a long, satisfying sip. Right beside her, sitting tall and taking up a good portion of the bench, is Onyx, her big black Maine Coon. His shaggy coat looks almost smoky at the edges, his ear tufts stand up like little antennae, and his golden eye glints as he watches the yard.
Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, known for their long, shaggy coats, tufted ears, bushy tails, and gentle, friendly personalities. They are often called gentle giants and tend to be sociable, playful, and devoted to their families, sometimes following their people from room to room. Their thick, water-resistant fur developed to handle cold northeastern winters, which means they can feel the summer heat. Shady spots, fresh water, and regular brushing to remove loose undercoat help them stay comfortable in warm weather. Just keep the lemonade for yourself, since citrus and sugar do not agree with cats.
Onyx does not seem interested in the drink anyway. He has his shady bench, a gentle breeze ruffling his magnificent coat, and his favorite person close at hand. That makes for a perfect summer afternoon in any cat's book.
