The First Snow Fell Overnight. Grandpa Otis Made Sure Bear Saw It.

Snow has blanketed the yard, frosting the windowsill and the pinecones resting outside the glass. Inside, Grandpa Otis has scooped up Bear, every big furry inch of him, and holds him up to the window so they can both take in the view. The black German Shepherd rests his front paws against the frame, ears high and eyes fixed on the white world outside. Otis, in a chunky green cardigan, grins with his cheek pressed close to the dog's shoulder. Behind them, the house is snug and cluttered, with bookshelves, potted plants, and a basket by the wall.

German Shepherds have a dense double coat that handles cold weather well, so many of them love romping in the snow. Even so, winter brings a few hazards. Rock salt and de-icers can irritate paw pads, so wiping paws after walks is a good habit, and pet-safe ice melt is available. Antifreeze is very toxic to pets and tastes sweet, so clean up any drips in the garage or driveway. Lifting a large dog also takes care for both of you. Support the chest and the hindquarters at the same time, bend at the knees, and skip the heavy lifting if your back or joints aren't up to it.

Bear seems delighted by the view, and Otis looks even happier to share it. A first snowfall is better enjoyed side by side.
