Grandpa Otis Just Wanted to Wash the Car. Then He Turned On the Hose.

Car wash day has turned into a water fight, and only one side is winning. Grandpa Otis leans over the hood of his dark sedan in a brown cable-knit cardigan, scrubbing with a soapy yellow sponge and laughing hard. Right beside him, Bear rears up on his hind legs, mouth wide open, snapping at the arcs of spray flying off the hose. Water splashes across the dog's glossy black coat and drips from his chin. A bucket of suds sits on the driveway, a green hose snakes across the pavement, and potted plants and raised garden beds fill the sunny yard behind them.

Lots of dogs go wild for hose water, and on a warm day it's a fun way to burn energy and cool off. Use a gentle spray rather than a hard jet, which can hurt eyes and ears, and let the hose run for a moment first, since water sitting in a hose in the sun can get very hot. Keep car-washing soaps, waxes, and wheel cleaners away from your dog, because licking them off the fur or out of a bucket can upset the stomach. Dogs that gulp a lot of water while playing can occasionally swallow too much, so take breaks and keep the sessions moderate.

The car may end up cleaner than the dog, or maybe the other way around. Either way, Otis seems to be having the most fun he's had all week.
