Grandpa Otis Came to the Beach for the Ocean View. Bear Had His Own.
Beyond the weathered railing, sea grass bends in the wind and gray-blue waves roll onto a misty beach. Grandpa Otis sits on a wooden bench on the deck, wrapped in a thick olive cable-knit cardigan, his white beard neatly trimmed and his eyes crinkled in a warm smile. Bear has nestled right against his chest, chin lifted, gazing up at Otis with a look of pure devotion. The deck behind them is dotted with potted plants and a green watering can, and a wooden fence separates the yard from the dunes. The air looks cool and salty, perfect for a cardigan and a cuddle.
Beach outings can be a treat for dogs, with lots of new smells and room to roam. A few precautions help. Check local rules first, as many beaches limit dogs to certain areas or seasons. Bring fresh water, since drinking salt water can make dogs sick. Sand can get very hot in summer, and sharp shells or fishing hooks can hide in it, so keep an eye on paws. After a visit, rinse off sand and salt, which can irritate skin, and check ears for moisture. Cooler, overcast days like this one are often the most comfortable for thick-coated breeds like German Shepherds.
Otis gets the sound of the waves, and Bear gets Otis's full attention. It's hard to say who's enjoying the view more.
