The Rain Started Pouring at Sunset. Earl and Pearl Didn't Move an Inch.

Rain is coming down in soft silver sheets, lit gold by a sun that has not quite given up for the day. Under the shelter of the porch roof, Earl sits with his gray hair tousled and his beard catching the light, staring out at the dripping garden. Pearl perches on the wooden boards beside him, ears forward and golden eyes thoughtful, following the same view. The porch is crowded with the bits of a busy outdoor life: a blue watering can, rubber boots, clay pots, a basket, a towel slung over the railing, and a few toys scattered by the steps.

Many cats are fascinated by rain, as long as they get to stay dry. The sound of drops, the movement of leaves, and the scents that rain stirs up from soil all give a cat plenty to watch and sniff. A covered porch or a window seat lets them enjoy the show safely. Storms are a different story for some pets, though. Thunder and sudden changes in air pressure can make cats nervous, and they may hide under furniture or in a closet. The kindest approach is to let a frightened cat retreat to a quiet spot and not force her out. If storm anxiety seems severe, talk to your vet about ways to help.

Earl and Pearl look like they could sit here until the last drop falls. Nobody is in a hurry, the garden is getting a good drink, and the porch is exactly where they both want to be.
