Grandpa Kenji Just Needed to Run an Errand. Maple Claimed the Front Seat First.

Hands resting on the big old steering wheel, Grandpa Kenji glances over with a quiet smile, and Maple sits tall in the passenger seat like she owns the truck. Her ears are up, her blue eyes bright, and her mouth is open in that classic husky grin. The cab is worn in all the right ways, with cracked vinyl seats and a dusty dash, and outside the window a tidy suburban street waits for their next errand.

Car rides can be a joy for dogs, but safety matters. A loose dog in the front seat can be hurt by a sudden stop or by an airbag, so the safest place is usually the back seat, secured with a crash-tested harness and seat belt attachment or a well-anchored crate. Letting a dog hang its head out the window looks fun, but it can lead to eye injuries from debris. Never leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle, even on a mild day, since the inside of a car can heat up quickly, and huskies with their thick coats are especially vulnerable to overheating. For dogs who get anxious or carsick, short, positive trips to fun places help them build good associations, and your vet can offer advice if motion sickness is a problem.

Plenty of huskies love a road trip, mostly because it means they're going somewhere with their favorite person. Even a run to the hardware store becomes an adventure.

Wherever Grandpa Kenji is headed today, Maple is clearly ready. The only question is whether she'll be in charge of the radio.
