Grandpa Wen Took Misty to the Farmers Market. She Took Charge of the Tour.

Crates of carrots, heads of cabbage, bunches of herbs, and baskets of apples line the busy market lane, and Misty is walking right through the middle of it all like she owns the place. Her thick cream coat is fluffed, her gray-blue face turned to the side, and her blue eyes are wide with interest. A few steps behind, Grandpa Wen ambles along in a green argyle sweater, grinning from ear to ear as if he can't quite believe his cat is enjoying this so much.

Taking a cat to a crowded outdoor market is something only the calmest cats tolerate, and Ragdolls are among the breeds most likely to manage it. Still, safety comes first. A well-fitted harness and leash, or a pet stroller or carrier, is essential in a busy place, since crowds, dogs, and sudden noises can startle any cat. Microchipping and an ID tag add a layer of protection. Watch what's on the ground: dropped food, onions, grapes, and discarded wrappers can all be dangerous if eaten. Signs of stress in cats include flattened ears, a low or puffed tail, dilated pupils, and trying to hide, and if you see them, it's time to head home. Many cats are happiest exploring new places in short, quiet doses.

For Grandpa Wen, the market is a weekly highlight: fresh air, friendly vendors, and a good excuse to stretch his legs. Bringing Misty along makes it even more of an outing.

She hasn't picked out any vegetables yet, but she's clearly scouting. By the end of the trip, every vendor on the row will know her name.
