An elderly man sleeps in a rope hammock between two trees while a fluffy blue point Ragdoll cat sits alert on his chest. 17 / 34

Grandpa Wen Fell Asleep in the Hammock. Misty Took the Night Shift.

AI imageragdoll cathammockbackyard

Two trees, one rope hammock, and a very uneven division of duties. Grandpa Wen has fallen fast asleep, head tipped back against the netting, glasses still on and green sweater vest rumpled. Misty, however, is wide awake. She sits upright on his chest like a fluffy sentry, front paws planted, thick cream coat puffed around her, and her blue eyes staring straight ahead with an expression of calm authority. Oak leaves rustle overhead, succulents fill clay pots along the fence, and fallen leaves are scattered across the yard.

Ragdolls are heavy cats, and a full-grown one resting on your chest is noticeably substantial. Males especially can be quite large compared with many other breeds, and they keep filling out for a few years before reaching their adult size. That weight is part of their charm, but it's worth keeping in mind for older owners: a big cat jumping onto a swinging hammock can shift the balance, so a sturdy, well-anchored hammock is important. Cats often sit on their sleeping humans for warmth and closeness, and also because a raised perch gives them a good view of their surroundings. If your Ragdoll enjoys time outdoors, keep the yard secure and supervised, and check the area for toxic plants.

There's something endearing about a cat keeping watch while its person sleeps. Whether she's guarding him or simply enjoying the view, Misty has clearly decided this is her post.

Grandpa Wen will wake up eventually, probably with a warm, heavy Ragdoll still sitting exactly where she was. He likely wouldn't have it any other way.
