Grandpa Otis Had One Vanilla Cone. Saffron Wanted to Know All About It.
Vanilla ice cream piled high on a waffle cone is the treat of the afternoon, and Grandpa Otis is holding it out with a sly, tender grin. He's dressed in a chunky olive cardigan, his gray beard neatly trimmed, eyes crinkled with amusement. Saffron, his ruddy Abyssinian, has leaned right up to the cone, her warm copper coat glowing and her large ears perked forward as she gives the scoop a careful, investigative sniff. A glass of water sits on the table, and the bright living room behind them is calm and airy.
Abyssinians are one of the most curious, active cat breeds around. They're known for their ticked coats, with bands of color on each hair that give that warm, glowing look, and for their busy, inquisitive personalities. They like to investigate everything, including whatever their people are eating. Ice cream, though, isn't a good snack for cats. Many adult cats are lactose intolerant and can get an upset stomach from dairy, and the sugar adds nothing healthy to their diet. Chocolate flavors are toxic, and some sweeteners in light or sugar-free products may also be risky for pets. A cat-safe frozen treat, or simply a regular cat treat, is a better option. Talk to your vet if your cat seems unwell after sneaking a lick.
Saffron's curiosity is part of her charm. A sniff here and there is how an Abyssinian learns about her world.
Grandpa Otis will likely finish the cone himself, but he'll probably let Saffron keep sniffing until the very last bite. Sharing the moment counts, even if the ice cream doesn't.
