Grandpa Set Up the Checkerboard for a Quiet Game. His Sphynx Wanted to Referee.

Clarence leans over a worn wooden checkerboard on the back porch, glasses low on his nose, one hand hovering over a black piece while he weighs his next move. His olive cable-knit cardigan looks like it has seen a hundred afternoons just like this one. Right at the edge of the table, Moonpie, his grey Sphynx, has parked her wrinkled chin and is staring at the board with those pale green eyes as if she has strong opinions about the red side. Potted plants, a garden chair and a weathered fence fill the yard behind them.

Sphynx cats are famous for being social, curious and a little bit clingy, which is why so many of them insist on being part of whatever their person is doing. They have almost no fur, so they lose body heat easily and tend to seek out warm laps, sunny spots and close company. That same bare skin collects natural oils that fur would normally absorb, so most Sphynx owners give gentle baths on a regular schedule and wipe out their large ears often. They also do best indoors or with supervised outdoor time, since they can get chilly in cool air and sunburned in strong sun. If you are ever unsure about skin care or sun exposure, talk to your vet.

Clarence may be playing against himself today, but with a referee like Moonpie watching every jump, nobody is getting away with a sneaky move.
