The Whole Backyard Turned White Overnight, and Grandpa Couldn't Wait to Show Her

Snow blankets the backyard outside, piling on the fence, the rooftops and the bare branches, while a warm lamp glows inside by the window frame. Hank stands holding Cotton up against the glass, one hand under her chest and the other supporting her back legs. He gazes out at the white world with a wide, wondering smile, his plaid shirt and overalls lit gold by the lamp. Cotton peers out with her blue eyes wide, front paws resting on his fingers and long tail dangling, seemingly just as fascinated as he is by the drifting flakes.

Winter brings a few hidden hazards for pets that are worth keeping in mind. Antifreeze is one of the most serious, because it has a sweet taste that can attract animals, and even a small amount can be deadly. Wiping up spills in garages and driveways and storing containers tightly closed are important habits, and some brands use less toxic formulas. Space heaters and fireplaces should be guarded so curious cats cannot knock them over or singe their fur. Outdoor cats often seek warmth under car hoods or in wheel wells, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the engine can prevent a tragedy. And for most cats, enjoying the snow from a warm windowsill is the very best way to see it.

Outside, the snow keeps falling. Inside, Hank and Cotton share the view, warm and content, from exactly the right side of the glass.
