Grandma Dipped Her Toes in the Lake. Her Husky Decided to Join Her.

The lake is calm and grey-green, lapping gently at the edge of an old wooden dock, and Ruth has rolled up her pants and dipped her bare feet into the cool water. She sits in her soft oatmeal cardigan with her silver hair pinned up, eyes half closed and a peaceful smile on her face. Copper has pressed himself right against her side, one front paw resting in the shallow water near her ankles, head tucked under her chin as he leans into her hand. A coiled rope, a wicker basket and a little lake house with a glowing window sit behind them.

Many Huskies are curious about water, though not all of them are natural swimmers, and some prefer to wade rather than dive in. If your dog spends time around lakes or docks, a few precautions go a long way. A well-fitted dog life jacket is a smart idea, especially for boating or deep water, and teaching a dog where to exit the water, such as a ramp or a sloped shoreline, can prevent panic. Lake water may contain bacteria, parasites or harmful algae blooms, so avoid letting dogs drink it and rinse them off afterward. Their thick double coat can take a long time to dry, so a good towel and some time in the sun help prevent skin irritation.

Ruth and Copper are not going swimming today. They are simply sitting together, feet and paws in the water, letting the evening drift by.
