Gus Made One Sandwich for Lunch. A Golden Nose Had Questions.
Lunch on the backyard bench was supposed to be a solo affair. Gus has already taken a couple of big bites out of his sandwich, and now he is holding it out at an angle while Honey gives it a careful, lingering sniff, lips just parted, eyes locked on the prize. Gus is beaming at her like he already knows how this ends. Behind them, a tidy garden of potted herbs and flowers sits along the fence, a green hose is coiled by the shed, and the afternoon sun warms everything.
It is very hard to say no to a golden retriever at lunchtime, but it helps to know what is in that sandwich. Common fillings like onions, garlic, and chives are toxic to dogs, even in small amounts, and grapes or raisins sometimes sneak into chicken salad. Deli meats and cheeses tend to be high in salt and fat, and mayonnaise is not doing any dog's waistline a favor. Goldens are well known for loving food and putting on weight easily, so treats should stay a small part of the day. A plain bite of unseasoned cooked chicken or a dog biscuit is a safer way to share the moment.
Whether Honey gets a corner of crust or just a scratch behind the ears, she has made her case very clearly. And Gus, judging by that grin, is already losing the argument.
