Grandpa Found the Shadiest Spot on the Porch for His Lemonade. So Did Someone Else.
Under the porch roof, out of the bright afternoon sun, Henry is taking a long, slow sip of lemonade through a straw. A slice of lemon floats in the glass, beads of condensation run down the side, and his eyes are half closed with satisfaction. Tucked in the crook of his other arm is Peanut, her long cream fur soft and fluffy, her ears out to the sides, gazing off with a sleepy, sweet expression. Behind them, the yard shimmers with green leaves and sunlight, but this little corner of shade belongs to them.
Small dogs like Chihuahuas can struggle in both cold and heat. Their size means they warm up and cool down quickly, so shade and fresh water are essential on hot days. Signs of overheating include heavy panting, drooling, weakness, or seeming unusually wobbly, and that is a reason to move to a cool spot and call your vet. Being held is a common comfort for Chihuahuas, who often prefer to stay close to their favorite person. Just make sure the lemonade stays a people drink. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and sugary drinks offer nothing a dog needs. A bowl of cool water is the better choice.
Henry has his tall glass of lemonade, Peanut has her favorite seat in the house, and the afternoon is drifting by at an easy pace. That is a summer day done right.
